![]() ![]() Rabelais Books is bringing an 1806 edition to the show. Only four copies of the first edition are known to exist. The original first appeared in 1796, right after the American Revolution, and was so popular that it was pirated and copied for 30 years. One of the oldest cookbooks in the Rabelais collection is "American Cookery," by Amelia Simmons - the first American cookbook written for an American audience. ![]() Who doesn't have a worn, thumbed edition on their cookbook shelf? If you don't, you're missing out on a cookbook that is as American as apple pie. Her daughter, Marion Rombauer Becker, illustrated the original and later took over the book and grew it into the blockbuster that remains a kitchen staple today. Irma Rombauer originally wrote the book as a way to stave off the turmoil, emotionally and financially, following the suicide of her husband. Among the desirables at the sale will be an early edition - 1943 - of "The Joy of Cooking," self-published by a mother and daughter. ![]()
